The program

Crisis and Historical Change is an intensive one-year postgraduate program offering a Master’s degree (75 ECTS credits). It is organized by the Department of Social Anthropology and History, and was launched in 2015-16.

The Program provides a comprehensive review of the question of historical change in the major fields of human action, through concrete historical examples. At the same time, it trains students in the methodological tools and analytical approaches of contemporary historical research.

Students are required to attend five compulsory courses (three in the winter and two in the spring semester), each of which is awarded 10 ECTS credits:
• IAL-1 Theories of Historical Alteration
• IAL-2 Ruptures in Macro- and Microhistory
• IAL-3 Socio-economic Transformation
• IAL-4 Continuities and Discontinuities in Ideas
• IAL-5 Societies in Conflict

In the course of the spring semester, students are also required to conduct research on a historical topic and present a paper at a special academic workshop organized by the Program in June (10 ECTS credits).

Lastly, in order to earn their degree, students must deliver a Master’s Thesis of 10,000-15,000 words by September 30. The thesis is awarded 15 ECTS credits.
